NAIDOC Week 2020 – Always was, Always will be

At BGC Housing Group we’re proud to call Whadjuk land (Perth) our Kalil (home)
and play a role in shaping our local communities both now and in the future.

NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. It originated from the emerging Aboriginal groups in the 1920’s that wanted to increase the awareness about the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australian’s across the community.

NAIDOC week celebrations are held across Australia to celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is important that we all continue to learn and become more aware of this important part of Australian culture. Please have a read and explore the links below.

Australia’s First Peoples are the world’s oldest surviving culture – and if you take a look at the Indigenous map of Australia, it’s easy to see why! Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australia is made up of hundreds of different and distinct groups, each with their own language, laws, customs, and culture.

 

Seasons of Change

The six seasons helps determine where to forage, gather, hunt and camp and has a plant indicator that flowers in advance of each season change.

 

• BIRAK (December/Jan) – Dry and Hot ‘Season of Young’
• BUNURU (Feb/March) – Hottest part of the year ‘Season of Adolescence’
• DJERAN (April/May) – Cooler weather begins ‘ Season of Adulthood’
• MAKURU (June/July)- Coldest and wettest time of the year ‘Season of Fertility’
• DJILBA (August/September) – Mixture of wet days and warmer days and cold nights ‘Season of Conception’
• KAMBARANG (October/November) – Longer dry periods ‘Season of Birth’
